Afghanistan: Time to Go Protest
|
Date & Time
Sat, 20 November 2010
Location
London - Hyde Park to Trafalgar Square
Event Information
On the 20th November 2010, a national demonstration was called by the Stop the War Coalition, the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and the British Muslim Initiative. The demonstration called for an immediate end to the occupation of Afghanistan by British forces. It occurred on the same day that NATO leaders met in Lisbon to discuss the future of the war.
Central London Stop the War organised a feeder march down Edgeware Road. The group met at Edgeware Road tube station and marched down the street with banners and placards, joining the main assembly at Hyde Park Corner with thousands of other demonstrators.
The Central London Stop the War banner was up at the front of the main march and the protest march ended at Trafalgar Square, with up to 10,000 people demonstrating their opposition to the war.
The demonstration gave voice to the vast majority in the UK who oppose the war. Now we have to build the movement and increase the pressure on the government for the urgent withdrawal of troops from Afghanistan.
Following the March, an anti-war rally took place at Trafalgar square. The following people made speeches at the rally:
Seumas Milne, Guardian JournalistLowkey, Rapper and Activist
Mohammed Kozbar, British Muslim Initiative
Tony Benn, President of Stop the War
Joe Glenton, Soldier who refused to fight
Bruce Kent, President of CND
Terry Eagleton, Philosopher and Critic
Barnaby Raine & Amy Dunne, School Students Against War
A message of support from Ken Livingston was also read out.
